I started my journey as a journalist way back in 2002 before it was cool. Things were different then back when we still had real functioning newspapers.
I come from an era where most of the big cities in America had at 2 major newspapers and when I was a child, the order of the day was to get the San Antonio Light in the morning followed by the Express News in the evening. These days things have turned much more digital and run more in an ongoing cycle than around publishing deadlines.
When I started my career the two a day papers were mostly on their way out, but for sure every major city had at least one major paper publishing every single day. Knight Ridder is where I cut my teeth and it is where I learned the ins and outs of this crazy business and the world that we've become.
I had the opportunity to study legends like Hunter S. Thompson and the great Helen Thomas. I learned first hand from being in the trenches, writing first hand and getting the story in the backrooms, dark corners, and hallways. I also learned journalism in the cafes, truck stops, and warehouses of America as I made my way criss-crossing the country chasing campaigns and story ideas. My point is that my life is a exquisite tapestry of stories, photos, places and people.
After attending the funeral of the mainstream media I decided to cut out on my own to see what I could find. That meant finding new audiences across new-to-me platforms. So, cheers to this new media world and the crazy underpaid world that we are all part of in the new media revolution! I am going to try and get my pennies and hopefully give you something in return!
